The
9th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christ our security
Jesus said: ‘the person who does
the will of my Father in heaven will enter the kingdom
of heaven.’ In the Church we have done a great
disservice to the whole idea of the will of God. We
so often identify it with the things that go wrong –
like someone dying, or getting ill, or losing their
job etc. We hardly ever think of success and health
and well-being as the will of God. In the Scripture
we come to know that the will of God is about all that
is good and best for our lives and our loves. And we
have a great responsibility to bring all that is best
to one another in God’s name. So, we can say that
it is God’s will that we comfort one another in
bereavement; that we support one another in sickness;
that we help one another in adversity etc. It is when
we are like this in our homes and our community that
we enter the kingdom of God.
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.
Just for Today
You asked us to be like You, Lord, in all we say
and do.
Well, I have decided for just one day to try to be more
like You.
For today,
even if my anger is just, I will keep gossip off my
tongue.
I will bring it to You instead of allowing vengeful
words to be slung.
For today,
I will dutifully do a requested task and not complain.
Even though the favour benefits me not, from resentment
I will refrain.
For today,
I will not delight in my enemy’s downfall.
Hard as it may be, I will pray for that enemy most of
all.
For today,
I will remain patient when patience threatens to leave
me.
I will not lash out at another, no matter how trying
it may be.
For today,
I will be careful, even in private, as to what I say.
I will not use derogatory words or expressions in any
way.
For today,
I will put aside the temptation to procrastinate.
If something needs to be done, then laziness is no reason
to wait.
For today,
I will keep a smile on my fact and in my voice.
Even in the midst of a bad day, there is still much
good to rejoice.
For today,
I will make the effort, Lord, to be more like You.
If I can do it today, then I will try it again tomorrow
too.
