First Reading 1 Samuel 16: 1.6-7.10-13
God chose Daniel, the least of Jesse’s sons, to be king of Israel, while people look at appearances, God looks at the heart.

Second Reading Ephesians 5: 8-14
Paul tells the Ephesians that now that Christ has enlightened them, they must adopt a lifestyle in keeping with their new state.

Gospel John 9: 1-41

Sunday 2nd March 2008

Fourth Sunday of Lent

The Rose Within

A man planted a rose and watered it faithfully, and before it blossomed, he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom and also the thorns. And he thought “How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?” Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and before it was ready to bloom it died.

So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth grow amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects. We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never realise our potential.

Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns and find the rose within others. This is the characteristic of love, to look at a person, and knowing his faults, recognise the nobility in his soul, and help him realise that he can overcome his faults. If we show him the rose, he will conquer the thorns. Then will he blossom, blooming forth thirty, sixty, a hundred-fold as it is given to him.

Our duty in this world is to help others by showing them their roses and not their thorns. Only then can we achieve the love we should feel for each other; only then can we bloom in our own garden.

If you need Him,He will be there for you.

COMMUNITY NEWS, ACTIVITIES, EVENTS

Parish Forum: Mon March 10th @ 8pm, in St Joseph’s Hall Extracts from ‘Parish Renewal’ by Donal Harrington to ponder - “The final outstanding element which people seek in their parishes today has to do with gifts and giftedness. If in the past much parish activity revolved around what the priest did, this will not be the case in the future. Today’s parish is about a sense of participation and an active involvement on the part of all” P65

“There has been a lot of change. Priests and others responsible for parish life cannot continue to operate as if nothing has changed. It is not enough to continue to focus energy on providing substantially the same services as before and think that somehow that is going to bring people back. Things are not going to return to what they were” P74.

World Day of Prayer: This year the Women’s World Day of Prayer Service is taking place on Fri 7th March @ 8pm in the Cassandra Hand Centre, Clones. Guest speaker on the night is Mrs Pat Flynn.
