2nd Sunday of Advent

Parish Missal Readings (Year 2) p 401 & Proper p 986

First Reading Isaiah 40: 1-5.9-11
Prepare a way for the Lord. Isaiah asks us to declare with confidence our God is coming. He asks us to prepare our relationships, our places of work, our schools, our homes, and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Second Reading 2 Peter 3: 8-14
What we are waiting for is what he promised; the new heavens and new earth, the place where righteousness will be at home.

Gospel Mark 1: 1-8
‘Someone is following me, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals. I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

“Welcome Lord Jesus” - The Greatest Gift

Waiting until Christmas Eve to buy Christmas presents is not a good idea. It causes panic and often, poorly judged purchases. Presents require more thought if they are going to “hit the spot”.

Christmas presents have great symbolic meaning. They can sum up the previous months or years and they can carry a powerful promise for the future. They can disclose our understanding of the person to whom we are giving them. Not surprisingly gifts can go wrong!

The greatest gift is Jesus Christ. In coming among us he sums up and heals our past. He becomes a reliable promise for the future. And the way in which he comes to us—hidden in daily events, humbly in a stable—shows how deep he understands our innermost feelings and fears. Let’s welcome him with joy.
