The Lord is My Light and My Salvation

“What I want is mercy not sacrifice”. Aren’t we great people for working hard and giving so much of ourselves? And yet we can be so unhappy. The clue to life is found once again in the word of Jesus in the Liturgy for this week. Love is not so much doing things, as treasuring this other person as s/he is. That often takes mercy, which is about holding another gently in our minds and hearts and arms. This is particularly true of family life. Parents are generally very generous people and yet the complaint of so many young people is that their parents don’t listen to them. This is often because the parents are so busy getting things for their family rather than spending time with them. Married couples need to also listen to this message of Jesus and practice relaxing with each other. And in our parish we all need to contribute to a community that is built on reverence rather than ritual.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

“Don’t Let the Sorrow Dwell in You”

Many people in this world have died without having lived, while some are still living while dying. For them, life has become a heavy burden they can’t bear any longer, & the whole world seems to fall helplessly on them. This is a terrible time for them. Something has to be done in order to find relief. But things may happen in a way that, due to our sorrow we don’t make any effort to overcome even though we are able to do so; rather we sit on the fence, expecting others to solve our problems on our behalf. Here is an anecdote from which we can learn to solve our own problems in life:

“One day, a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried, unsuccessfully, to figure out what to do to help the donkey. Finally, he decided the animal was old, & the well needed to be covered in anyway; it just wasn’t worth retrieving the donkey. He invited all his neighbours to come over & help him. They all grabbed a shovel & began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realised what was happening & cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, the animal suddenly quieted down! A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, to be astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off & take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well & happily trotted off”

The moral of this teaches each one of us that, whenever the world pushes you down to your knees, instead of complaining, believe that you are in a better position to pray. Thank God that your troubles are a stepping-stone, & have brought you closer to the One able to lift you up: God! Moreover, you may learn that the shortest distance between a problem & a solution is that very distance between your knees & the floor. Therefore, whoever kneels to the Lord with Faith, can stand up to just anything!

Above all, life is going to shovel all kinds of dirt on you; the only way to get out of the well of our troubles is to shake it off & take a step up: Never give up!
