Sunday 11th May 2008 - Pentecost Sunday.

Receive the Holy Spirit

“As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” As we celebrate Pentecost, it is important to remember what it is about. The Holy Spirit is given to us, not as a possession, but as a power. And this power is one that can transform the world. We are given the power of love, which is invested in a special way in the various important relationships of our lives. That power of God is there in the sacrament of marriage, calling couples to love for the sake of the world. The power of love is in our families, making our homes the Domestic Church to the glory of God. And it is this power of God’s Spirit that is at the heart of every parish. All we have to do is practise that power and great things will happen all around us. There can be no doubt that great things need to be made happen in our world today. Receive the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Jesus Talking

Dear Friend,
As you got up this morning, I watched you and hoped you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words but I noticed you were too busy trying to find the right outfit to put on and wear to work. So I waited. When you ran around the house getting ready, I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but you were too busy.

At one point you had to wait fifteen minutes with nothing to do and when I saw you spring to your feet I thought you wanted to talk to me, but you ran to the phone and called a friend to make plans for the weekend.

I watched as you went to work and I waited patiently all day for you to say something to me but you were too busy. I noticed before lunch you looked around and three or four tables away you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn’t. You were probably a little embarrassed. That’s okay, there are many more hours left in the day for you to talk to me. After work you went home, did some things and then you turned on the TV. You spent a lot of time watching it not thinking about anything. I waited for you to talk to me after your evening meal but again not a word. You were too busy. I waited a while you did some chores and after that you watched some more TV and then very tired you went to bed.

I have great patience and I an always there for you and I hope that sooner or later you will realise that and make me part of your life. I love you so much that I died for you and even though I wait everyday for a nod, or a prayer, or a ‘thank you’ there is nothing. I often hear you talking about dialogue with your work colleagues but I am life carrying on a one sided conversation.

I wait with hope that tomorrow you will give me some time. Sleep well.

Your friend

Jesus.
