Third Sunday of Advent
(Gaudete Sunday)

First Reading Zephaniah 3: 14-18
Jerusalem is urged to rejoice because God stands in her midst. We too can take heart from this message of hope.

Second Reading Philippians 4: 4-7
Paul urges us to rejoice in the Lord and to let go of anxiety by living in a spirit of prayer and thanksgiving.

Gospel Luke 3: 10-18
John the Baptist tells the people what they must do to prepare for the Lord’s coming and to escape his searching judgement.

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH

Priest on duty today

Fr Duffy 047 51048

In faith our waiting is not difficult

What an impatient society we live in! Rushing, pressure, instant results, constant frustration are often all that we experience. Yet deep down we know that there is more to us than that. We also have a deeper presence within us: the presence of a loved one, the memory of music or a good book we are reading. Many things take us beyond the immediate present into a deeper meaning.

Indeed if our time is not filled with that deeper meaningful presence, time itself becomes unbearable. This, most likely, is the worst of being in prison. The deeper meaning of life is a kind of invisible force that bears us across individual moments.

Christ is the fullness of that invisible force. He is Lord of all time, never imprisoned by time, always present. He comes to us. We do well to watch, wait and welcome.
