Richer Today

You are richer today than you were yesterday...if you have laughed often, given something, forgiven even more, made a new friend today, or made stepping stones of stumbling blocks;

if you have thought more in terms of “thyself” than of “myself”, or if you have succeeded in being cheerful even if you were weary. You are richer tonight than you were this morning...if you have taken time to trace the handiwork of God in the commonplace things of life, or if you have learned to count out things that really do not count, or if you have been a little blinder to the faults of friend or foe. You are richer if a child has smiled at you, and a stray dog has licked your hand, or if you have looked for the best in others, and have given others the best in you.

The best things are nearest: breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of Right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life’s plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things of life.
