Sunday 16th March 2008

Palm Sunday of The Lord's Passion

Prayer for Today
"Dear Lord, today we remember Your triumphant journey into Jerusalem, but let us not turn our backs on you in the coming days, weeks, months and years as the rejoicing crowd did after that day! Help us to stay on our journey with You day by day. Keep us ever faithful to our commitment to spend more time with you. To give just an hour a day in Your company through prayer and the scriptures, and perhaps even an hour a week keeping You company in front of Your Divine Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Help us to forgo the temptation to return to our lazy ways when this Lenten Period is over. “
“Into Your hands O Lord I commend my spirit”

REFLECTION

The acclamation of Jesus by the crowds as he enters Jerusalem contrasts sharply with the humiliation and suffering he endures in his Passion and death. We know that neither of these is the true destiny of Christ. His true destiny is the triumph and glory of the Resurrection. In this is reflected our own destiny and should help us to remember that both worldly success and human pain are things that pass and that our real hope lies in the eternal life of God’s Kingdom.

The Easter Triduum

These three special days are celebrated from the evening of Holy Thursday until Easter Sunday morning. We call Christ's Passover through death to risen life, the ‘Paschal Mystery'.

Holy Thursday: The Mass of the Lord's Supper with its themes of service (the gospel of the washing of the feet) and the gift of the Eucharist;

Good Friday: The celebration of the Lord's Passion is a unique liturgy, "austere but never sad.” It ponders the saving death of the Lord Jesus; He gave all for us, to save us.

The vigil of Easter night proclaims Christ's resurrection from the tomb and of our rising with him from sin to the new life of love and grace. We are part of the Paschal Mystery. We come through the Penitential Fast of Lent to the Paschal Feast, and the joy of the Sunday of the Resurrection. We are called to new life.
