Sunday
Duty Rota for Priests in Clones Parish

“Called
to Serve” Sunday
In this our Year
of Vocation it may seem that only priesthood or marriage
are highlighted. These are the great vocations and they
make a positive difference to society and to the Church.
However, our Year of Vocation includes everyone. No
one can say: “I have no vocation; this doesn’t
involve me”. The fact is that everyone has a calling,
a vocation. No matter who we are, we are called to serve.
Whether we know
it or not, when we help others, we are answering the
call that comes to us from God in our baptism. God calls
us all to serve: He calls us to give help and service
to each other both within our homes and outside of our
homes. Today, we honour and recall those who answered
and continue to answer that call to serve in the wider
parish community.
In today’s
Gospel, Jesus invites us to reflect on the grain of
wheat. It gives itself and in so doing it appears to
lose, to be destroyed, to die. But through that loss,
something else is found. The seed that dies is an image
of what it is to be a follower of Jesus. It is a ready
image of those who give themselves in the service of
others; the club & committee members, the organisers,
the teachers, the home helpers, the health carers, the
parish team members, & all those who give time outside
of their homes for the activities that help our parish
& our local community to tick over.
During Lent,
the followers of Jesus might ask themselves some questions:
In what way am I like the wheat grain that remains alone,
that gives nothing? In what way might I be like the
wheat grain that gives itself to bring new life? Do
I use my time selfishly? Even if I do not feel that
I have much to give, do I give it anyway? Do I ever
think of doing something to help others? Can I see the
connection between me giving myself, my time & my
energy for others & Jesus giving himself for us?
What growth might come about in my life if I lived a
little more for others? Jesus was prepared to give his
whole self so that others would benefit: what could
we do today to be more like him?
