The Feast of St Peter & St Paul

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH

Priest on duty this week Fr Kearns

Jesus put this question to his disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” That would not seem like a question that we would be able to answer today. But for us it can be translated into the question of: “where do people look for their happiness, their fulfilment, their hope?” Everyone is looking for these in their lives, some in very strange places. The second question Jesus asks is: “Who do you say I am?” And Peter answers: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The core of our Christian faith is that Jesus is the only one who can teach us true human living. He teaches it very clearly as the way of love. That is the only way to happiness and fulfilment and hope – the only way to the fullness of life. This has huge implications for us in marriage, the sacrament of love; in family life, the school of love; and in our faith community, the prophet of love. The practice of our faith is measured mainly by how we love God with our whole hearts and how we love one another.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Chosen Vessel

The Master was searching for a vessel to use,
On the shelf there were many, which one would he choose
“Take me, cried the gold one I’m shiny & bright,
I’m of great value & I do things just right
My beauty & luster will outshine the rest,
& for someone like you, Master, gold would be best
The Master passed on with no word al all;
He looked at a silver urn, narrow & tall;
“I’ll serve you, dear Master, I’ll pour out your wine
& I’ll be at your table whenever you dine
My lines are so graceful, my carvings so true,
& my silver will always compliment you”
Unheeded the Master passed on to the brass,
It was wide mouthed & shallow, polished like glass
“Here! Here!” cried the vessel, I know I will do.
Place me on your table for all men to view.”
“Look at me”,called the goblet of crystal so clear.
“My transparency shows my contents do dear
Though fragile am I, I will serve you with pride,
& I’m sure I’ll be happy in your home to abide
The Master came next to a vessel of wood,

Polished & carved, it solidly stood.
“You may use me, dear Master, the wooden bowl said.
But I’d rather you use me for fruit, not for bread”!
Then the Master looked down & saw a vessel of clay,
Empty & broken it helplessly lay.
No hope had the vessel that the master might choose
, To cleanse & make whole, to fill & to use.
Ah! This is the vessel I’ve been hoping to find
, I will mend & use it & make it all mine.
I need not the vessel with pride of itself;
Nor the one who is narrow to sit on the shelf;
Nor the one who is big mouthed & shallow & loud;
Nor one who displays his contents so proud;
Nor the one who thinks he can do all things just right;
But this plain earthly vessel filled with my power & might.
Then gently He lifted the vessel of clay.
Mended & cleansed it & filled it that day.
Spoke to it kindly “There’s work you must do.
Just pour out to others as I pour into you”.
