The
Lourdes Grotto was built by William McMahon & Sons,
contractors, and was completed on the 1st March 1959.
The stones for the Grotto were donated by James Sherry,
Munnily.
The round kneeling stones were taken from the Canal
Bridge at Clonavilla which had been demolished some
time previously.
Mrs Ellen MacCabe of Sunnymeade donated the two figures.
They were painted by Harry Cleary.
The marble stone under the statue of St. Bernadette
was from the old Baptismal font and the sandstone walk
around the Grotto was from the old footpath in Fermanagh
Street.
The parishioners drew the stones and material voluntarily.
The cost of building the Grotto was minimal, £243-6-0.
The Grotto was blessed on the 26th April, 1959, by Dr.
O Callaghan, bishop of Clogher on the occasion of his
visit to the parish.
